Mardi Gras, Carnival Cruise Line‘s much anticipated new Excellence-class cruise ship, finally set sail on the 31st of July from her homeport of Port Canaveral, on a weeklong pre-inaugural Caribbean voyage. Similar in style to P&O Cruises latest ship Iona, Mardi Gras however has one feature that you will not find on any other ship at sea, a roller coaster! The name of this epic ride? Bolt. Let’s find out more about this impressive cruise ship roller coaster ride.

What is Bolt?

Bolt is the very first roller coaster ride at sea, in fact, it has been dubbed by Carnival as “The Ultimate Sea Coaster”. Once you’re all strapped in the motorcycle-style speed machine takes you on a 360-degree tour around the top deck as you fly past the iconic red funnel enjoying the amazing sea views from high above sea level. Each machine has space for two people, with the person at the front, the driver, able to manage the speed, so whether you want to take a leisurely loop around the ship, or hurtle around as fast as you can, its completely up to you, as long as you’re sat at the front!

Bolt Facts

  • Top speed: 40mph
  • Track length: 800 feet
  • Track height: 187 feet above sea level
  • Average time per lap: 20 seconds
  • Height restrictions: All riders must be at least 4 foot 4 inches tall
  • Entrance location: Deck 18
  • Cost: $15 per ride

Take a look at this first-hand video of Bolt, as you fly past the iconic Carnival Cruise Line funnel, whilst admiring the 360° views of the Caribbean around you.

Will Bolt feature on any other Carnival ships?

Yes! Carnival fans will not only be able to experience Bolt onboard Mardi Gras, the first-ever roller coaster at sea is also set to feature on Carnival Cruise Line‘s next ship, the Carnival Celebration, which is due to set sail on the 6th of November 2022 from Southampton.

Hi Victoria, Bolt features on Carnival Mardi Gras which is currently sailing in the Caribbean, and will also feature on Carnival’s next ship, Carnival Celebration, which is due to launch later on this year and will even sail from Southampton on a transatlantic voyage. We’ll send over some more details by email.
